Scouting Fundraiser at Joe's Crab Shack

Our Patriot District Friends of Scouting committee has come up with a new great way to raise funds for our Boy Scouting program. Joe's Crab Shack in Fairlakes will donate 10+% of all sales on Sunday, March 18th, when diners identify their affiliation with this cause!

This is easy -- go to Joe's on March 18th between noon and 6:00pm, order your favorites on the menu, and hand your server a copy of the attached flyer. Joe's does the rest -- donating 10% of the dinner bill to the Friends of Scouting community campaign! All food and beverages (and especially dessert) are included! There is no limit on the size of your party so bring along friends, neighbors, and extended family members, as well.

Mark your calendars and come out to Joe's Crab Shack on March 18th to show your support for Joe's very generous support of the Scouting program. Remember to take a copy of the attached flyer!

Patriot District Units,

A few days ago we passed along the information below and asked for final registrations to be submitted at Roundtable. We all know that Roundtable was washed out by our deluge, so last call for additional players/foursomes has been extended. We can accept new registrations through Saturday. This deadline is due to the need to notify the golf course on the final number of needed carts they should have ready.

Here are the details again:

The tournament will be on Monday, 12 September, at Generals Ridge Golf Course in Manassas Park with a shotgun start at 0900. The cost is only $100 per person.
You will also get a chance to meet our Honorary Event Co-Chairs - The Honorable David Bulova, Virginia Delegate for the 37th District and The Honorable Pat Herrity, Fairfax County Supervisor, Springfield District.
There will be on course games, a silent auction and raffle prizes! Each player will get a free raffle ticket. Additional tickets will be available for $1 apiece, 6 for 5 dollars and 25 for $20.
For only $20 you get 2 mulligan’s, a yard of string, a cherry bomb, and one “Strasburg”. All of these items make the event that much more exciting and competitive!
We have some excellent Silent Auction items to include prizes provided by the Wizards, the Nationals, the Redskins and the Capitals just to mention a few.
We also have excellent prizes for the longest drive and closest to the hole.

Come be a part of what is becoming the premier fundraising event in the Patriot District! We will be accepting check, cash or credit!

Patriot District Units,

We still have openings for the 2nd Annual Patriot District Golf Tournament! The tournament will be on Monday, 12 September at Generals Ridge Golf Course in Manassas Park with a shotgun start at 0900. The cost is only $100 per person.

We are almost halfway toward our goal of 20-Foursomes so making your commitment today will go a long way to making the event a "smashing” success.

Religious emblems program starting next week - spaces available!

St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Burke is sponsoring the Religious Awards program (God & Me and God & Family) during the months of March & April. Children in grades 1-5, both girls and boys, will meet for six fun one-hour sessions for singing, crafts, and instruction Thursdays at 5:30 pm. They’ll learn about their relationship with God and how God works within a family. This course is presented from a very generic Christian, Protestant perspective. There’s a web page full of details at http://www.ststephensfairfax.org/latest/religous-emblems-for-scouts-campfire.

No church affiliation or Scouting affiliation is necessary (so invite your neighborhood kids, too!) The fee is $25 and includes all materials and the awards (very nice enameled medals plus certificates) as well as a pizza party during the last session. The medals will be presented at St. Stephen’s during Sunday worship in May, 2011. These awards can be worn on Scout (boy & girl) & Campfire uniforms. Adult volunteers are welcome (you’ll be here to drop-off your children anyway) and volunteers are eligible for a special mentoring award as well (a patch and for Boy Scout leaders a “knot”.)

Scholarships are available for those with special needs.

Supervising the course is the Rev. Roger Baker, trainer for Pack 1131 . If you have concerns about the course content, call him directly at (571)268-2887.

Patriot District Pinewood Derby Registration is Open

Registration for the 2011 Patriot District Pinewood Derby is now open. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Volunteers Needed
We will be needing other volunteers to help on Race Day and especially for set-up (Friday night and Saturday morning), pit crew and clean-up. If you are available to help, please send an e-mail to us at patriotpwd@yahoo.com . We can also use other Committee members to help out in planning and preparation.

Jack Campbell, Patriot District Vice Chair for Programs, provides the following information affecting submission of tour plans for certain categories of your unit activities. Please see the attached PowerPoint presentation for details.

Tour Plan FAQ’s

Many changes have been made in the filing and processing of Tour Plans (previously called “Tour Permits”) recently.

Here are the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. When do I need to file a Tour Plan?

A. When any of the following apply:

*Trips of 500 miles or more

*Trips outside of council borders not to a council-owned property (Camp Snyder or Goshen SR)

*Trips to any national high-adventure base, National Scout Jamboree, National Order of the Arrow

Conference, or regionally sponsored event

*When conducting the following activities outside of council or district events:

o Aquatics activities (swimming, boating, floating, scuba, etc.)

o Climbing and rappelling

o Orientation flights (process flying plan)

o Shooting sports

o Any activities involving motorized vehicles as part of the program (snowmobiles, boating, etc.)

*At the Council’s request

Q. My unit is going to Scout camp. Do we need a Tour Plan?

A. If your unit is attending a Scout camp belonging to our council (Goshen, for example) you do not need to file a tour plan. If your unit is attending an out of council camp, you will need to file a tour plan and a letter of proof of insurance will be provided with your approved Tour Plan to present to the camp attending.

Q. We are leaving for summer camp in Pennsylvania on Sunday. Can I get my tour plan processed the Friday before we depart when I pick up uniforms at the Scout Shop?

A. In order to properly process a tour plan, you must allow three weeks (21 days) lead time on filing the tour plan. We cannot expedite tour plan approvals or letters for proof of insurance for late submissions.

Q. Do we always need a Tour Plan?

A. Tour plans are not required for travel to/from and participation in a council camp or council/district event such as a training course, camporee, etc. Otherwise, follow the guidelines in the first FAQ above.

Q. Why do I need driver information?

A. Driver information shows that each driver has the minimum required insurance coverage for the state in which they are licensed. If you have a list of all the drivers in your unit, simply attach a copy and circle those who are driving for each event as needed.

Q. What training should I have for my Tour Plan?

A. At least one registered member of each group must have Youth Protection Training, updated within the past two calendar years prior to the date of departure, as well as the new Planning and Preparing for Weather Hazards training, also updated within the past two years. Other training may be required depending on the event for which the tour plan is requested (such as Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Wilderness first Aid, CPR, etc).

Q. Do I need to hand deliver my tour plan? Can I email it?

A. Tour Plans may be hand-delivered or mailed to the council office at 9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda MD 20814, or faxed to 301-564-9513. Tour Plans may be sent via email to Sandra Escoto, sandra.escoto@scouting.org. Please reference Tour Plan in the subject line of your email.

Q. How do I receive my copy of the approved Tour Plan?

A. Your approval will be emailed please include an email address on the Tour Plan OR, to the primary address on the Tour Plan. We can also fax the approved tour plan if you provide a fax number.

Q. What is the most common mistake on a Tour Plans?

A. Missing signatures. Please be sure to affix the required signatures before submitting your Tour Plan.

Patriot District - Rechartering and Recharter Training

Unit Recharter packets were distributed at the October Roundtable and the following letter was attached to each one. Just in case you haven't seen it, I'm copying it for you here. Take note of the dates for Recharter Training and Recharter turn-in.

Patriot District Scouters:
The time has arrived for all Scout units in Patriot District to recharter. Our recharter window opens starting on November 1. That means that starting Nov 1, units may log on to the recharter website. All units must submit their recharter on line and turn in their completed recharter packets in November or December or their charters will expire on January 1, 2010.

Turn-in opportunities are:
• Nov 23, 7:30 PM, St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 9203 Braddock Road
• December 4, 9:00 to 1200 noon, the LDS Chapel, 4911 Ox Road (where we meet for roundtable)

Training:
To assist units in navigating this process, Patriot District is offering two training opportunities. We hope units that have new recharter coordinators or are just rusty on the process will send a representative to one of these sessions:
• Thursday, November 4 – 7:30 PM at the LDS Chapel, 4911 Ox Road (where we meet for roundtable)
• Sunday, November 14 – 4:00 PM at Blue and Gray VFW Post, 5703 Vogue Road, Fairfax Station. This is right outside the rear exit to the Fairfax Station Square Shopping Center off Ox Road. You can park near Gold's Gym and just walk out the rear exit and around the corner.

Youth Protection Training Now Mandatory for All Scouters

From the Patriot District Commissioner:

There is a new BSA policy on Youth Protection Training. Please linked document carefully and pass on to your units. This was a surprise to volunteers and professional staff alike. Bottom line – new adult applicants will have to complete YPT and submit the certificate with their application. Scouters cannot reregister if YPT is not current.

The Council has posted an FAQ as well.

The event will be hosted by the Honorable David Bulova, Virginia Delegate for the 37th District. Mandatory Direct Leader Training

Patriot District Unit Leaders:

The National Capital Area Council has been selected to participate in the Mandatory Direct Leader Training program of the Boy Scouts of America.

This program is very important to our units because it means that in order to re-charter for 2011, each "direct leader" must complete a list of "mandatory" training.

So who is a "direct leader" and what are the "mandatory" training requirements.

This Link has a chart with the titles for direct leaders and their mandatory training requirements. If you are a direct leader, you must complete the mandatory training requirements.

To report completion of the mandatory training requirements use the form included in the attachment to this message. Patriot District direct leaders must complete this form as soon as possible, and return it to Philip Sternberg phil.sternber@gmail.com. Phil will coordinate updating the BSA ScoutNet through NCAC.

Roundtable Presentation on Bullying

At the next roundtable there will be a presentation on bullying. During the February Roundtable, when the presentation was first presented, it was decided that this was an important enough topic to be given again with plenty of advance notice. So I invite all of you to come to the Patriot District roundtable on March the 11th and listen to this very important topic. To answer the question "Why talk about Bullying?".here are some thoughts

An alarming percentage of young people encounter bullying at one time or another during their school years. Estimates range from 10 percent who report being victims of severe acts to 75 percent who have reported at least one incident of bullying during the past year. The fact that bullying is so common does not change the fact that it can cause serious harm.
Loss of self-esteem and self-confidence can result from being the victim of bullying. In addition, the National Education Association estimates that 160,000 students are absent from school every day simply to avoid being bullied. Low grades, depression, and withdrawal from social situations are other potential results of being victimized.
During the past decade, school shootings, suicides, and other acts of extreme violence by individuals who endured years of bullying have highlighted the fact that bullying is not a harmless and inevitable part of the experience of growing up.
The values of Scouting make it clear that bullying cannot be tolerated, and we in Scouting have a unique opportunity to teach respect and acceptance of others and to create an environment that is safe and healthy for learning. In keeping with the Scout motto, we have a commitment to assist young people to Be Prepared to handle the difficult situations they are likely to face.

APPLY TO BE A HOST ON THE BOY'S LIFE "SCOUTING FOR ADVENTURE" TV SHOW - Deadline is 3/1/2010

As filming for the third season of the Boys' Life television show, "Scouting for Adventure," gets underway, a unique opportunity is available for local Scouts.

The show is looking for 4 to 8 Scouts to serve as "hosts" for the upcoming season. The boys will travel with the film crews to each adventure and interact with the troops and crews already on scene.

It's a big commitment. The chosen Scouts must be prepared to devote themselves to this project. They will need to dedicate their spring break and the entire summer to travel with the show, as well as at least two additional weekends during that time. Although the travel is not scheduled to be continuous - meaning the Scouts will rarely be gone as much as a week at a time - things can change depending on camp, base and activity schedules.

Candidates must be between the ages of 15 and 18. Eagle Scouts are preferred.

To apply, each candidate must submit an application at
http://www.boyslife.org/sfacandidates which includes:

1. A brief bio written by the Scout.

2. A 2 to 4-minute video in which the Scout is on camera and a) tells us his best Scouting story and b) "covers" one of his unit's meetings, activities or outings as a reporter on scene would.

Energetic Scouting

Go to any Cub Scout meeting and you can see first hand the standard for energetic Scouting. It is set by the youngsters as they run around crazily, cheering at the top of their lungs, doing their best and giving their all at each Scouting activity. I've seen some great leaders, but none of them have the energy of the Cubs. Everything is new to the Cubs. Scouting is exciting. Scouting is fun.

The energy of the Scouts is the main reason why folks want to be Scout leaders. As my 1932 version of the Scoutmaster handbook says in the section labeled "Why Scoutmasters Need Scouting":

"Leadership of Scouts brings many 'by-products' to the Scoutmaster: 1. His own youth is renewed thru his association with youth--the real fountain of youth sought by Ponce de Leon..."

You need to be a part of Scouting at the unit level to "recharge your batteries," as our District Commissioner Tony Ryan is fond of saying.

Similarly, one's career as a professional Scouter needs renewal from time to time. Any time you do something for a long time, you begin to think you've seen it all. You stop looking at Scouting through those young eyes. Your energy wanes.

This is a long way of saying that this is the last blog post I will be doing for the Patriot District. I've been selected to move into the Development Department of the Council to be a full time fundraiser for the Scouts.

The change comes at a cost, of course. In my more than two years in Patriot, I have developed relationships with unit leaders, youth, and volunteers at all levels who I will be sorry to leave. This hit home with me this last weekend as I attended a handful of Blue & Golds to Courts of Honor. It's nice to feel like I'm known and appreciated, which is how I feel in Patriot District.

But it's time to learn new skills, have new responsibilities. It will be a good move for me if I ever want to be a Scout Executive one day. And I must admit it's kind of exciting to be doing something different.

My replacement is a great one. A seasoned professional Scouter, Gary Carroll, from Montgomery County will come down to Patriot. Besides liking him personally, I admire the work that he's done for Scouting in Montgomery County. He's a dynamic guy and he's passionate about Scouting. And I'm sure coming to a new district--and such a good one--will energize him too.

Please feel free to keep in touch with me--especially if you're one of the handful of leaders who actually reads this blog. My email address won't change--I'll just have to be in Bethesda a little more.

�Scouting in Action � A Century of Values�

Constitution Avenue (7th to 17th St NW), Washington, DC

Everyone loves a parade!

Councils across the land: Come on down in July 2010 and join with the National Capital Area Council to be part of the Grand Centennial Parade of the Boy Scouts of America. The Parade is being co-sponsored by the National Council and the National Capital Area Council. Many councils and NCAC units have already expressed great interest. We are now able to share greater details with you as we move forward with the planning � so here is the latest update:

When: July 25, 2010, 1:00 pm step-off. Most marching elements will begin assembling by 11:00 am. Participants will need to plan to be in DC around 10:00 am for staging. Last elements will disperse by 5:00 pm.

Where: Constitution Avenue in the heart of our Nation�s Capital, from 7th Street NW to 17th Street NW, past many prominent and historic monuments and the White House. This is the first BSA parade to be held on Constitution Avenue since the 1937 National Jamboree.

Themes:
Scouting in Action: Five floats depicting BSA core principles of Leadership, Achievement, Service, Character and Outdoors.
A Century of Values: Ten historic divisions, each representing a decade, followed by the Eagle Scout division.

Features: 6,000 Scouts representing every BSA council. Could be Cubs, Boy Scouts, Venturers, or a composite unit, your choice! Bring your council colors!

9,000 local area Scouts marching or reviewing the parade

1-2 bands or drum and bugle corps in each division. Many are, or originated from, Boy Scout units and are nationally renowned. If your council has a marching musical unit, let us know.

Highlights of historical Scouting events within each decade

National Jamboree troops who are not officially representing their council in the parade will have the honor to serve as �Reviewing Units� at designated positions along the parade route.

Before and after the parade, enjoy �Centennial Scouting on the Mall,� featuring Adventure Base 100. We will offer daytime Scouting activities like geocaching and historic hikes that will run continuously from July 23 through August 8.

Boy Scouts of America: Today National Photo Contest

In celebration of the Boy Scouts of America's 100th Anniversary, the BSA and licensee DK Publishing will produce a new photo book to document Scouting as it exists today. This book, Boy Scouts of America: Today, is scheduled to be released in October 2010 and will incorporate both professional and amateur photographs of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers engaged in activities that represent the 12 points of the Scout Law.

To support this book, the BSA is sponsoring the Boy Scouts of America: Today National Photo Contest. Eligible participants may enter the contest by submitting photographs in any or all of the 12 categories to visually depict the 12 points of the Scout Law-trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Winning entries will printed in the book Boy Scouts of America: Today, and the winning photographers will receive a copy of the book and a $50 gift card for official Scouting merchandise purchased through Scoutstuff.org or at any participating Scout shop. Employees of the Boy Scouts of America National Council or local councils, their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling, and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live), and persons living in the same households of such employees, regardless of relation, are not eligible to participate. As you know we're searching for a new Scoutmaster to take over this awesome troop. It's time for me to step down, but not time for me to quit. Will Scouting work for boys who are in court committed situations?

The question is like a situation they might give me in my National BSA training. How do we preserve our Scouting identity, while remaining flexible enough to reach boys who have never had a chance to do Boy Scouts?

We are in the midst of a great experiment. There is a Boys Probation House on Shirley Gate Road. The adult leadership there is interested in starting a Boy Scout Troop in order to give the youth there an opportunity to do a program that will connect them with positive role models.

The man who volunteered to be the Scoutmaster, Lt. Cmdr. Michael Files, asked the adults at the probation house what they would consider success. The Program Coordinator there said one word: “Trust.”

He wants the boys to be able to trust.

Is that success for Scouting? Or does Scouting demand more than just trust from its youth? The Scout Law demands the youth be “trustworthy.” What does this mean for court committed boys?

My guess is that ole Baden Powell would say Scouting works for any boy. I think you have to hope so…

If you have a heart--and the patience for boys like these--please let me know. We are currently looking for merit badge counselors who are willing to give a couple Sunday afternoons a year to the boys at the Probation House.

As noted in the postcard, in my conversation with you and/or in the introduction on the Gathering of Eagles form (www.boyscouts-ncac.org/gatheringofeagles), our aim is simple -- to share with you local and national 100th anniversary activities for the Boy Scouts of America, to encourage networking among Eagles, to re-engage those Eagles who may have stepped away from Scouting for a while, and to encourage continued support of Scouting.

Our Steering Committee is up and running with a Program team chaired by Steven Swann, a Public Relations team chaired by Tim Bintrim, and a Fundraising team chaired by Bill Huddleston. Several of you have already signed up for one of these teams. If you have not and would like to, please let me know.

Check this page often to keep up-to-date about current Eagle and Council activities that might be of interest to you. The first activity to consider is our inaugural event - 'The First Gathering' - on Wednesday, October 28 inWashington, D.C. NCAC Scout Executive Al Lambert will be on hand to share with us some of the exciting Centennial activity details and I'll play host along with the Steering Committee.

I encourage you to attend 'The Gathering' and take the opportunity to connect with as many of your brethren as possible. We are a unique collective that has within its power the ability to have a tremendous impact on the Scouting in this region and on Scouting's future.

Where: Flying Circus Aerodrome, Bealeton, Virginia

Activities:

At the Camporee, scouts and Webelos will have a chance to learn about many subjects related to flying. There will be separate programs for the Boy Scouts and the Webelos. The Boy Scout program will center on aviation themed merit badges. Scouts will be able to take the following merit badges; Aviation, Space Exploration, Astronomy, Radio, and Weather. Aviation is an all day merit badge. Scouts can sign up for Astronomy and Space Exploration, Radio, or Weather so they can earn two merit badges at the Camporee. The Webelos program will consist of flying remote controlled model airplanes, constructing and flying sophisticated paper airplanes, knot tying, and dodge ball.

Cub Fun Day 2009

When: Saturday, September 26 10 AM-2 PM

Where: Camp Snyder, Haymarket Virginia

What: A day of games, activities, archery, BBs and more! New Cub Scouts (Cub Scouts who have joined between May 1 and September 25) will be able to launch their very own rocket for free.* Families will also get a sneak peek at the fun and adventure waiting for them next summer.

Who: Cub Scouts, their families, and their friends

How much: FREE!!!! Lunch and rockets for returning Cub Scouts will be available for purchase. There will also be a "Trading Post" with toys, games, scout gear, patches etc. for sale.

Why: We know boys join Cub Scouts to have fun. Studies show that the sooner new Cub Scouts get a good outdoor program, the more likely he and his family are to stay involved. We also know that September is a hectic time for packs and leaders may not have time to plan a quality outdoor event. We hope that all packs take advantage of this opportunity to get their boys outdoors and enjoying what Scouting is all about!

Patriot District Scouting for Food 2009

Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food (SFF) is an annual occasion for a Scout to give service to others and to be aware of those around us who are in need. The National Capital Area Food Bank and many other food pantries and charitable kitchens make wise use of American's generous gifts to SFF. Through each Unit's work, and with high public interest and participation, SFF has grown to become one of the largest food drives in the Northern VA/DC/Maryland area. Here are the significant dates for SFF in the Patriot District:

Thursday, October 8th, 7:30 p.m October Patriot District Roundtable Meeting: Bag Pick-up and Zone Assignment will be made. We will also conduct some informal training. All Units should have a Scouting for Food Coordinator attend the October Roundtable meeting.

Saturday, November 7: Bag Distribution: Distribute bags to homes in your zone. Flyers, Inserts will also be available to place inside your bags.

Saturday, November 14: Food Collection: Collect food in your zone and deliver to district collection point at Burke Centre Safeway. Other food banks or charitable kitchens are also permissible, but keep track of your bag numbers or weight.

Tuesday, November 17: Final Reports Due: Unit's finalize SFF data (participation; quantity of food; etc) and submit to the SFF District Coordinator

Scouting For Food and Good Turn for America

The Scouting for Food event is a great chance for every unit to submit at least one service project for the year to Good Turn for America. So as you're completing reporting on your Scouting for Food collection, don't forget to submit the result to the national GTFA database as well. Reporting your service projects makes your members eligible for the GTFA patch, and it also helps Scouting by documenting the service we've done in support of our community.

We will hand out bags at roundtable on October 8th and each leader is urged to come and collect their rations of bags for their units for delivery in their designated areas.

Scouting for food delivery of bags will begin November 7 and pick up of food will begin November 14 and food will be brought to the Safeway at Burke Center.

WE will begin collecting as early as 9 AM Saturday November 14^th with the help of the OA and scout helpers. Those wishing to earn community or service hours please check in with the OA.

There will be a ceremony on 5 August 2009 at the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery at 0900 to honor the veterans of Operation Dragoon, the allied invasion of Southern France. We will have 30 veterans of the landing present, primarily from the 3rd Infantry Division and the 1st Airborne Task Force.

The attached invitation provides further details and background as to why we are organizing the ceremony. We hope you can come and help honor these great American and allied soldiers, and we would ask you to please pass the invitation on your circle of friends whom you think would be interested in a historic event.

BSA's Innovation Council

Getting past labels and stereotypes, past the rhetoric and politics--even past some of the bad poetry of some Scouting leaders--is difficult in our movement.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with an official from the National Office's "Innovation Council." Rani Monson, Innovation Director at the National Office, was on a country-wide tour and wanted to hear what we thought about Scouting: how it needs to change and how it needs to stay the same.

It was a frank back and forth with Ms. Monson, our Scout Exec, Al Lambert, and three other district serving execs like me. She was at least as critical as we were of the Boy Scouts: we're not dynamic enough, not cool enough, not nimble enough, not inclusive enough.

It is her council that has put together an "innovation engine" for the BSA: http://ideas.scouting.org/

Ms. Monson was totally new to Scouting when she took her current job with the BSA, which has its advantages and disadvantages, as you might imagine. The major advantage is that she is a thoughtful advocate of our program, but also knows what an outsider might perceive about the BSA. And there are a lot of terrible perceptions of our movement.

Her ideas for our movement were complex, but from what I could tell, here are some results that she'd like to see:

The uniform abolished, or a different uniform produced by the fashionable athleticwear maker UnderArmor.
Better sharing of best practices among councils
More digital resources and a more dynamic Cub Scout program

It was a disheartening meeting for me. Here was an outsider, put in an important position in the national office, giving credence to the worst stereotypes about our movement. On the other hand, she can't ignore the perceptions. If she did it would be business as usual in the National BSA and business as usual isn't working, if you read our 30-year membership numbers.

What did I take from it? As our Scout Exec said, we've been having the same discussion for 30 years--since he was a district exec in the south side of Chicago--and it has always been a question of how we maintain our identity and preserve the things that work, while making the BSA a movement that appeals to new populations. That's less of an answer than a question, I think.

A friend of mine who went to Philmont training with me approached the BSA's National High Adventure Director and said brazenly: "I want your job. What do I need to do?"

The guy smiled wryly said, "You have to have a hard head and thick skin." Surprising to us both. As we continue in this profession it rings more true than ever. I know that boys love to play in the woods, shoot weapons, play with fires. I know they like to swim and sail in lakes and go horseback riding.

No matter what anyone says about this movement, we're the best organization to give boys these opportunities.

Asking for money

As the son of a United Way Exec., fundraising should come easy to me. And I guess it is. I don't have an issue asking for money. And asking again, again, and again. I believe in our mission and the money goes to support the mission of the BSA.

We are getting close to finishing our Family Friends of Scouting campaign. The goal for our district is $70,000, which is one of the top goals in the council. And other than the newly formed Montgomery District, which was created from 6 districts in Montgomery County, we have raised the most money of any district in the council. Per capita, Patriot does more than its fair share.

Fundraising is an interesting lens to look at our community. My best friend from college was an economics major. I asked him about this major--I was an English major, something I loved, so I just didn't get what he liked about boring economics. He explained that at NYU (our alma mater), he had made a conscious decision to be an economics major instead of finance major. Finance was a science. Economics was an art.

And that's what I mean when I say that fundraising is an interesting lens to look at our community. There's a science to fundraising: direct mail, donor databases, well-researched prospect lists. And there's the art: the art of the ask, the art of the pitch, the art of prospect cultivation, relationship building, connecting our donors to our mission and to our programs.

The science of fundraising tells me to look for people with the ability to give. The art tells me to look for the most compelling Scouting stories.

What I find fascinating is the irony (it must be my English-major nature). Irony is what happens when ones expectations are changed. I am always surprised by the sort of financial support Scouting receives (or doesn't receive). A working-class family that whose sons have dropped out of Scouting still supports the BSA because of what we do for the community. A wealthy family with 3 boys in Scouting won't give because they feel that the time they give to Scouting is the way they want to support our programs. A Scout leader won't give because he didn't receive his FOS recognition patch or cap from the year before. A parent whose son has graduated from the Troop gives a huge gift every year and says he doesn't want any recognition--saying that Scouting has already given him his gift, a son who was profoundly influenced by our character-building program.

The stories of giving, I guess, is what interests me. Why folks give, why they don't, shines a new light on our community. And I guess it's easy to criticize folks for not supporting the Scouts, but that's just not constructive. The most important thing is to shape our fundraising message. Connect folks to the costs of Scouting and our mission in the community. Show folks what we do for the community.

In a way, it's like what my teacher wife calls "differentiated learning." I give a fundraising pitch or make an ask and everyone hears a different story, a different appeal. Some folks tell me to concentrate on the costs of Scouting. Some folks say I need to focus more on the stories of our youth in Scouting. Some folks wish I just wouldn't take up so much time with my FOS pitch--they're going to support the BSA anyway!

All this goes into the extent to which a person supports Scouting financially.

And it's a lot more complicated and nuanced than just asking for money...

Troop 1345 in Burke has two openings for the Mountain Man High Adventure program at Blue Ridge Scout Reservation the week of July 12-18. Scouts must be age 13 or older and be able to backpack gear 1 1/2 miles. The cost for the week is $295 per scout.

Eagle Application and Service Project Workbook Update

If you have not heard, there is a new 2009 Eagle Scout Rank Application form (512-728). The 2008 version will not be accepted by the NCAC after August 1, 2009. The 2009 form is very similar to the 2008 form but more
information and a detailed review are forthcoming from the NCAC Advancement Committee.

The .pdf version of the form is fillable and savable, unlike previous versions. Please test this on your own computer before losing substantial work. As with all scouting changes, there is a transition period from now until August 1, 2009 where the current 2008 Eagle Scout Rank Application form is valid and can be used by candidates for Eagle Scout. Scouts who have started their project or will have it completed before August 1, 2009 are not affected.

Scouts do not need to re-do your Eagle Scout Rank Application form or project write-up if they believe they will have their Eagle Board of Review prior to August 1, 2009. If the Eagle Board of Review is conducted after August 1, 2009, then the Scout must use the 2009 version of the Eagle Scout Rank Application form but can use the current Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook if the project was started and complete before August 1, 2009. Note: Scouts may use the new 2009 Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook (512-927) now if they want but it is not required unless they are starting and/or completing their project after August 1, 2009. The .pdf version of the workbook is also fillable and savable, unlike previous versions. Please test this on your own computer before losing substantial work. We will get a Microsoft Word version of the form out as soon as it becomes available.

Bloodsuckers & Pontificators

The other day I found myself listening to Rush Limbaugh. I've always enjoyed his program. I don't always agree with him, but I know why he's so popular. He's downright funny.

Rush was getting on a rant about Obama's commencement speech at Arizona State University. Obama was saying, "If you're a business major why not help a struggling non-profit improve its business model... If you're a nurse why not go into public health..."

According to Rush, Obama was telling everyone to go into non-profit work.

"Bloodsuckers," Rush said. "That's what the non-profit sector's filled with. Bloodsuckers." He went on to explain that if you got hit up as much as The Great El Maha Rushi, you'd think that all those non-profit folks were bloodsuckers.

No, Rush said. It was the producers that make the nation great. They make money that fuel the do-gooders' non-profits.

Boy did I get mad. I've never been angry from listening to Rush. Usually I get on my high horse with him. Laugh at all that liberal minutiae. But it really got to me.

Was I a bloodsucker? Was I wasting some talents that could better be used in the for-profit sector?

Before I get too far with this, don't worry. I'm not going to abandon my job as a professional Scouter to sell pharmaceuticals. But it really stuck in my craw, I have to admit.

My wife is on her seventh year teaching at an inner-city charter school in the District. My wife and I are poster children for the sort of stuff the Obamas keep on saying at all these commencements (although, I bet Obama would rather I worked for the Boys & Girls Club than the Boy Scouts--a subject for another blog post...).

We're going to Canada this next week with the kids from my wife's charter school. Every year, she takes kids to a French-speaking country. Every year it has been France, but this year it will be French-speaking Canada. We'll take a bunch of kids from across the Anacostia to the sugar shacks in Quebec.

There will be other stuff on this trip--we'll bike around Old Montreal, go ice skating--but this is the sort of thing I live for. I like to think that the sugar shacks of rural Canada are about as foreign as the streets of Paris or the villages of Paraguay to these kids from DC. It's the sort of wholly foreign landscape that a Scout from Burke might see on horseback in Philmont, New Mexico. And to be there when a young person's worldview changes radically--well, it's indescribable.

Maybe that's what's missing in Obama's charge and Rush's rant: There are a whole host of reasons to do this work--and most of it has nothing to do with sacrifice.

Summer!

Here's my most recent Patriot Press article. Every year we camp a lot of boys, but there are always boys who slip through the cracks and don't attend a summer camp. I think we can always do a better job of getting boys to camp:

As we near the summer, the rubber hits the road, so to speak, when it comes to Scouting. Our youth join the Scouts because they want to go outdoors. And summer is when the best outdoor programs happen.

When I was a youth I did a lot of learning in the classroom. I did some of it on the wrestling mat and on the soccer field. But a really special kind of learning happened for me in Philmont, New Mexico and Boy Scout Camps in Alabama and Wisconsin.

I want to make sure that every youth in our community has the opportunity to experience the special learning that happens in nature. Thoreau tried to do this for himself--by himself--and recorded his experience in Walden. These days we have a couple of guys that have captivated the public on television shows: Survivorman and Man vs. Wild.

I like Survivorman the best. The less popular of the two survival shows. It's more psychological and spiritual than physical, which is a lot like Thoreau's Walden. They went into this physical hardship and found out it was more psychological and spiritual than anything else.

But I can't make sure that this sort of learning happens alone. I need others to help me make sure that every boy has the opportunity to go to camp. I need leaders to make it a priority to get as many boys as possible to camp. I need volunteers to give the leaders the information they need to encourage boys to go.

In the Patriot District, our Packs, Troops, and Crews do a lot of camping. But we could still do a better job of making sure that more of our boys go to camp. I don't know the magic formula to make this happen. Ideas?

Unit Leaders,

At this time of year many units experience the arrival of new adult
volunteers, some of whom will serve either as Assistant Scoutmasters or as
new unit committee members.

Aasgeir Gangsaas, deputy district chairman, asks Scoutmasters to consider
having one or two of your new arrivals serve on the district committee for a
year or so in order to help deliver our district program support to all
Scouting units. District committee experience will provide helpful
perspective when these leaders are ready to assume greater responsibility
within their units in the near future.
